Tomorrow's engineers and scientists must be equipped with problem-solving skills and an ability to judge the consequences of technological solutions. The Institute of Technology is one of four faculties at Linköping University and one of Sweden's major faculties of engineering and science. It is an education provider with an international reputation for high quality and border-crossing education. Undergraduate and postgraduate students benefit from being in an environment of extensive and advanced research.
Linköping University (LiU) education emphasizes problem-solving skills, encouraging the individual student to actively pursue knowledge and an understanding of technological consequences.
Nationwide polls of graduates of Swedish universities have consistently top-ranked LiU’s Institute of Technology in key issues such as educational quality, student social life and preparation for the job market. This is a source of pride for us. In independent surveys our graduates state that their education at LiU prepared them well for the realities of professional life and led to high-valued jobs.
Most postgraduate research is in-depth study in a specific field but this often leads to scientific collaborations both within LiU and internationally. In both cases, there is a focus on the bona fide needs. Research at the Institute of Technology is to a great extent funded by external financing. In the near vicinity of the main campus in Linköping is Mjärdevi Science Park, home to some 220 high-tech companies, most with a focus on IT. Many of them are spin-offs from the Institute of Technology.
The Institute of Technology at Linköping University is one of the leading research institutions in Sweden in the field of emerging technologies and science. Cross-disciplinary research is one of the hallmarks of Linköping University. Most of the research is carried out either through internal cooperation, for example in the ICT-area with researchers from the departments of electrical engineering and computer science, or through external cooperation, such as the Centre for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV), where researchers from medical engineering and scientific visualization collaborate with researchers from the Faculty of Health Sciences. Another example is the strategic research centre for Organic BioElectronics (OBOE), a collaboration between groups specializing in organic electronics and biology.
Cross-disciplinary research can even be found within departments; for example in the recently formed Department of Management and Engineering, which merges competences in fields such as economics/management, logistics and production technology with environmental technology and energy systems. However, cross-disciplinary research also relies on the co-existence of strong disciplinary research and the Institute of Technology hosts world leading research in material physics, nano science/technology, visual information technology and autonomous systems, to name a few.
In Sweden, programmes and courses leading to a Bachelor's and Master's degree are defined as undergraduate studies. Programmes leading up to a doctoral degree are defined as postgraduate studies.
The Institute of Technology awards BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in engineering, computer science, mathematics and natural sciences. The main focus is on advanced engineering programmes leading to a master's degree. The main focus is on advanced engineering programmes leading to a master’s degree. Other study options integrate engineering, industrial management, natural science and/or computer science with the disciplines of sister faculties, such as medicine, the humanities, business law and languages.
The Institute of Technology has five main areas that contribute to all educational levels:

- Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics and Computational Sciences
- Mechanical Engineering and Design
- Industrial Engineering and Management
- Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering
To meet an international demand for quality education, The Institute of Technology offers a range of master’s programmes with instruction in the English language. All of the courses in the 20-odd English-language master’s programmes are also electives for students in the Swedish-language study programmes. The Institute of Technology promotes an international perspective. We encourage the students enrolled in Swedish programmes to participate in student exchange programmes abroad, such as the Lifelong Learning/Erasmus programme. The Institute of Technology is a member of many scientific networks through bilateral agreements with universities worldwide.
