Chapter 5. Study syllabus
§1 A PhD degree is achieved when the PhD student has completed studies at PhD level of not less than 240 ECTS within one major subject. The PhD student shall successfully complete all examinations included in her/his individual study plan and shall defend in public a PhD thesis worth not less than 120 ECTS. The scope of the thesis is to be set out in the general study syllabus for the subject. The thesis is graded as either pass or fail by an examination board appointed by the Board of the PhD studies.
§2 A licentiate degree is achieved when the PhD student has completed studies at PhD level of not less than 120 ECTS within one major subject. The PhD student shall successfully complete all examinations included in her/his individual study plan and shall defend in public a licentiate thesis worth not less than 60 ECTS. The scope of the thesis is to be set out in the general study syllabus for the subject. The thesis is graded either a pass or fail by an examiner specially appointed for this thesis.
§3 The faculty board regulates about which discipline on the PhD level are to be offered at the Institute of Technology. For each major the Board of the PhD studies regulates a general study syllabus. The general study syllabus includes details of the main content and the structure of the education including subject specific mandatory examinations, specific qualification requirements and principles for selection.
§4 The main supervisor, co-supervisors and the PhD student are to develop an individual study plan, i.e. a plan for the entire period of study up to intended degree. The individual study plan should be established within one month after admission to PhD studies, and it should be revised at least once a year.
The individual study plan is to include a timetable for the PhD courses, information on how supervision is organised, a description of the commitments of the student and the faculty board/department/supervisors during the entire study and anything else required for the studies to be conducted effectively.
§5 The individual study plan is to contain:
- personal details of the student, research subject and intended degree,
- personal details of the main supervisor and other supervisor,
- the responsibilities of the main supervisor and co-supervisor and the forms of and approximate scale of direct supervision,
- details of how the PhD studies are to be funded for the entire course of study,
- description of planned research assignments including timetable and publication strategy,
- the courses curriculum with all courses to be taken and all already successfully completed courses,
- the scope of the courses in teaching in higher education and the student’s department service duties during the entire period of study. Department service duties include required teaching, teaching preparation, examination marking, supervision of degree theses, the parts of course in teaching in higher education not counted as credits in the PhD education, administrative tasks, trust and union assignments. For PhD students who take the basic higher education teaching course (LUK1, 6 ECTS) not less than 3 ECTS are to count into the degree. Other time/credits count either as department service duties or PhD studies, as determined by the department.
- information on a suitable workplace and other resources needed by the PhD student,
- a report on how the degree outcomes will be met during the PhD education. The presentation is done either by using the appendix/addendent in the faculty template, or in an equivalent manner.
§6 The study plan is to be signed by the student, the supervisors and the head of department. The original copy is to be filed at the department. The student, main supervisor and co-assistant supervisors are to receive copies. The original individual study plan is to be entered in the student register.
§7 The individual study plan is to be laid down and then reviewed annually by the respective board of the department, or the body to whom this task is delegated by the board of the department. At the review stage, the PhD student and the supervisors are to notify the board of the department of how the student is progressing. The individual study plan can then or when necessary be updated as required. The PhD student and the supervisors are to confirm in writing that they have received the individual study plan and any changes that have been made to it.
§8 Wherever possible, postgraduate students are to have the right to pursue dissertation work in the principal orientation stipulated in the individual study plan, even if they change supervisor.
§10 The scope and the structure of the courses can vary from subject to subject and this is regulated by the general study syllabus for both licentiate and PhD degrees. Wherever possible, the individual study plan should include plans for how course requirements are to be met.
§11 Course and other examination requirements, for both licentiate and doctoral degrees are to be approved and reported by the main supervisor before tha day of the public defence/licentiate seminar.
§12 All students admitted to PhD studies from 1 July 2007 have to complate the faculty decided courses in philosophy of science, methodology and ethics, or equivalent courses of at least 6 ECTS. After completed courses, students should be familiar with scientific methodology in general and have demonstrated the capacity for intellectual independence, scientific conscientiousness and the ability to make research ethics assessments, and have shown a profound insight into the opportunities and limitations of science, its role in society and human responsibility for how it is applied.
The Board of PhD Studies decided 2011-04-26 (FuNP 11-2.6a) to except students admitted to PhD stuidies before 2010 from the requirement of compulsory courses in philosophy of science, methodology and ethics of at least 6 credits.
§13 All PhD students with teaching duties are to take a course in higher education teaching of at least 3 ECTS credits.
The university offers a course in higher education teaching via Centrum för undervisning och lärande (CUL). The course is primarily designed for individuals who are either going to start teaching or have little teaching experience.
§14 Other mandatory courses that can be included in the curriculum will be set out in the general study plan for the subject.
§15 Accreditation of courses at both PhD and master/graduate level and other professional experience is to be done if the courses meet the learning outcomes and the goals of the education. Accreditation of a course that is necessary to meet the eligibility requirements is not possible.
§16 Acreditation of the faculty mandatory courses is to be done on an application by the student and is made on a provided form. She/he leaves the application to the faculty board for PhD studies (FUN) for a decision. A course certificate and course syllabus is to be attached to the application. Decision regarding accreditation is made by the chairman of FUN. A copy of the decision is to be provided immediately to the student. The student may appeal the decision to FUN, within three weeks after the decision is made.
§17 Application for accreditation of other then the faculty mandatory courses is made on a provided form by the student; the application is to be attested or reject by the main supervisor and a positive decision on accreditation is taken by the Director of PhD studies at the department. A denial on accreditation of courses can not be made by the Director of PhD studies, but only by the Faculty board of PhD studies (FUN). An application for accreditation of courses that is not approved by the Director of PhD studies have to be sent to FUN. Regulations on course accreditation can be found in Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 6 Section § 6 - 8 as well as the university's local regulations for PhD studies (number LiU-2014-00530) and faculty study handbook for PhD studies. A denial on a request for course accreditation can be appealed.
Student results are registered in Ladok. At the end of the autumn and spring terms respectively, the departments report details of postgraduate student activities to the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education and SCB.
